Encaustic wax, hand dyed tissue paper and shellac on birch board.
This encaustic wax painting depicts an abstract flower radiating outwards from the richly textured centre. The underlayer of this painting is tissue which has been hand dyed using a traditional Japanese Shibori style of dying to create an abstract floral image. This design has then been enhanced with the addition of coloured encaustic wax to create a vibrant, colourful painting with a centre created from wax droplets in shades of white, pink and deep red. Gold highlights emphasise its depth and dimension, reflecting the sunlight coming in from the right. Long organic petals made from burnt shellac flow outwards from the centre, leading the eye around the design which floats above a luminous layered waxy surface of greens, blues and yellows, reminiscent of leaves and stems behind. The wax used in this painting gives it a beautiful glossy, dimpled surface.
The surface of this painting has some texture on the flower centre, which makes it tactile. The edges of this piece are finished with the distinctive ‘shou sugi ban’ charred wood.
Note: This piece is unframed with no suspension on the reverse, so that you can mount it to suit your room décor.
