SUBJECT
I apply layers of encaustic medium to a wooden board and fuse it with a blowtorch flame. Colour is then added through tinted encaustic paint, with each layer being carefully fused.
I use alcohol inks on synthetic Yupo paper and create my flowers by using an air compressor to blow the inks.
Encaustic painting has a long history, dating back to the 5th Century B.C. The word encaustic means to ‘burn in’, which refers to the process of fusing the wax medium and paint onto a wooden surface, using a blowtorch or heat gun. Encaustic medium is made of beeswax blended with Damar tree resin. Pigments are added to give colour. This technique allows the creation of a luminous, layered, smooth surface or a highly textured and tactile finish.
I hand-dye my tissue paper using a variety of methods: hand painting, dip dyeing, as well as using resist techniques including some Japanese Shibori methods.
Encaustic paintings do not need to be protected by glass. They do not need to be sealed or varnished. Some people choose to display them in a floater frame.
Encaustic art - beeswax is impervious to moisture, it should not deteriorate, yellow or darken. It is a stable and archival art medium. Keep the painting out of direct sunlight and avoid extremes of temperature. Encaustic art should be shiny. As the painting ages it may have a more matt finish, but the lustre and sheen can be restored by polishing the painting every few months with a soft, lint-free cloth to gently buff it. Use care when hanging, storing or transporting encaustic art.
Alcohol ink and resin art – my alcohol ink and resin artwork is sealed with an ultraviolet protective sealer to guard against damage from UV light. However, as with all fine art, always ensure that it is never displayed near direct sunlight, or in hot areas in your home.
